Introduction

This guide aims to help students identify Ohio's forms of local government and sources for finding the legal resources they produce. For contextual understanding of the state legal structure within which they function, see our Ohio  Primary Law and Ohio Secondary Sources  Research Guides.

Ohio's local governments include counties, townships, municipalities and special districts. They are all creatures of the state, and derive their authority from powers conferred by the state. See:

Search Many Primary and Secondary Sources at Once

  • Westlaw - Municipal Library Multibase (MUNI)  Icon
  • WestlawNext  Icon
    From the Browse Sources Menu, click on the state materials tab, then Ohio. Type a search in the search box to search all Ohio content. Alternatively, click on the radio button, Specify Content to search, and select multiple sources.
  • Lexis Advance  Icon
    Use the pulldown menus underneath the search box to select (1) Content Type (cases, statutes and legislation, administrative codes and regulations, administrative materials, etc. - can add secondary sources also or search everything) and (2) Jurisdiction - Ohio
  • Lexis Legal > Area of Law - By Topic > Municipal Government  Icon
  • Bloomberg Law  Icon
    Click on All Legal Content (Upper Left, under Getting Started-Research). Select US Law>Jurisdiction (in the grey bar). Click on the plus sign to open up State, and then Ohio. Click on the words "Combined Ohio" to search all Ohio sources. Or select multiple individual sources by clicking on the name of the source.
